School Integrations & School Data

Connecting your school is optional and off by default. Nothing it finds joins your work until you say so. This page explains what comes in, how it syncs, and how to take it out again.

Version 2026-09-11Effective September 11, 2026Updated September 17, 2026Pending legal review

This document was written by the people who make StudySocial and is waiting for a lawyer's review. It describes how the app really works today; the boxes marked For legal review are open questions, not rules.

1.Overview

StudySocial can read your assignments and deadlines from your school so you do not have to retype them. Nothing is connected unless you set it up yourself, and only the connection you choose is used. StudySocial is an independent project. It is not affiliated with any school, university or educational authority, and your school is not told that you use it.

There are two ways to connect. Most students will use a calendar link, which works with Brightspace (D2L), Canvas, Google Classroom, Blackboard, Moodle, Schoology and Sakai, and with any other platform that gives you a calendar link. Microsoft Teams does not publish one, so it cannot be connected this way. The full sync is built for Brightspace only, and appears only when a school has issued StudySocial an OAuth client.

2.Calendar link

You copy the personal calendar link from your school platform and paste it into StudySocial. From then on, StudySocial reads that link to keep your deadlines current. Brightspace’s link is the one that has been tested end to end against a real school account; the others use the same standard calendar format, and a school can switch the link off at any time.

Some platforms publish one calendar per class rather than one for everything. Google Classroom works that way, so you can add several links to the same connection.

What is read
The names and due dates of dated items on the calendar, the class each belongs to when the calendar says, and the parts of the course (modules, units, weeks) when the calendar publishes those as dated entries. A module or week is kept as a period, never as something with a due date.
What happens to it
Nothing joins your work list automatically. What StudySocial finds waits under “New from your school”, and you choose what to keep and which class it belongs to. You can switch a connection to add new dated work automatically in Settings.
Why
So your school deadlines appear in your work list without retyping them.
How often it syncs
When you connect, and when you open Today or Work if the last check is older than 15 minutes, and whenever you press “Sync now”. There is no background sync while you are away.
Where it is stored
In StudySocial’s database, visible only to you. Never shown to friends or anyone else.
Credentials stored
The calendar link itself, encrypted with a server-side key. After you save it, it is never shown again, not even to you. Links are fetched over https only, and only from public addresses.
Can StudySocial write to your school?
No. A calendar link is read-only by nature, and StudySocial only reads it.
How to disconnect
Go to School connections on the Settings page and remove the connection.
What happens to imported data
Disconnecting deletes the connection, its encrypted secret, and everything imported from it, immediately. Assignments you added to your own work list stay as your own assignments.

3.Brightspace full sync

Full sync is only available when a school has issued StudySocial an OAuth client for its Brightspace. If your school has not, you will not see this option. When it is available, you sign in at your school’s Brightspace and approve the connection there.

What is read
Your courses (names and codes), assignment folders with their instructions and attachment file names and sizes, and quizzes. Instructions are cleaned of scripts before they are stored.
What happens to it
The same as a calendar link: nothing joins your work list until you choose it under “New from your school”.
Why
So your school deadlines and instructions appear in your work list.
How often it syncs
The same as a calendar link: when you connect, when you open Today or Work if the last check is older than 15 minutes, and when you press “Sync now”.
Where it is stored
In StudySocial’s database, visible only to you.
Credentials stored
The access tokens your school issues, encrypted with a server-side key. They are never shown to anyone after saving.
Can StudySocial write to your school?
StudySocial performs read operations only: who you are, your enrollments, assignment folders and quizzes. It never sends anything back.
How to disconnect
Go to School connections on the Settings page and remove the connection.
What happens to imported data
Disconnecting deletes the connection, its tokens, and everything imported, immediately. Assignments you added to your own work list stay as your own.

4.What StudySocial never does

  • Never writes to or changes anything in your school system.
  • Never submits work on your behalf.
  • Never sees or changes your grades.
  • Never tells your school that you use StudySocial.
  • Never shares your imported school data with other users, including friends.

5.Imported data can be wrong

StudySocial shows what your school sent at the last sync. Feeds can lag, instructors change dates, and a sync only runs when you open the Work page. Always verify due dates and instructions at the source before you rely on them.

If an item disappears from your school’s side, StudySocial marks it “no longer posted” rather than deleting it, so you can see what changed. You can remove it yourself, or disconnect to clear everything imported.

6.Your controls

  • Connect, check for updates, or disconnect from School connections on the Settings page.
  • Disconnecting deletes the connection, its secret and all imported data immediately.
  • Deleting your account at Settings → Account deletes every school connection and everything imported.
  • How school data fits into the rest of your information is covered in the Privacy Policy.
